Master the "Acceleration of Profit." Gamma measures how fast your Delta changes, giving you an edge in volatile markets.
Gamma ($\Gamma$) represents the rate of change in an option's Delta. If Delta is the "speed" of your option's price movement, Gamma is the "acceleration."
A higher Gamma means that your Delta is highly sensitive to the underlying price. This is a double-edged sword: it can lead to exponential profit growth in a strong trend, but also rapid losses if the market suddenly reverses.
You may have heard of a "Gamma Squeeze." This occurs when many traders hold ATM (At-The-Money) options. As the stock price moves up, the Delta of these options increases rapidly. Market makers, who sold these options, must hedge their risk by buying the underlying stock, which pushes the stock price even higher, causing Delta to rise further in a feedback loop.
Gamma is highest for At-The-Money (ATM) options and peaks as you approach expiration. If you are an option buyer looking for explosive moves, high-Gamma, ATM options expiring in the near future provide the most "acceleration"—but they are the riskiest to trade due to their extreme sensitivity to any price correction.
