What is Open Interest?

Open Interest (OI) represents the total number of outstanding derivative contracts (options or futures) that have not been settled. Unlike volume, which counts the total number of trades for the day, OI increases when new contracts are created and decreases when contracts are closed. It is a direct measure of the money flowing into (or out of) specific price levels.

Why it's a "Smart Money" Indicator

Strategic Use

When analyzing an options chain, look for the "Max Pain" point or the strike price with the highest call/put OI. These levels often act as "anchors" for the price. If the price breaks through a massive OI wall, it frequently triggers "short-covering" or "long-liquidation" rallies, creating explosive volatility.
