Sector Rotation

Sector rotation is an investment strategy that involves shifting your portfolio's focus from one industry sector to another in anticipation of the next stage of the economic cycle. Because different sectors (like Technology, Energy, Utilities, or Healthcare) perform differently depending on interest rates, inflation, and growth expectations, moving capital to "in-favor" sectors can significantly outperform a buy-and-hold strategy.

• Early Cycle (Recovery): Capital flows into interest-sensitive sectors like Financials and Consumer Discretionary as the economy begins to grow.
• Mid-Cycle (Expansion): Technology and Industrials typically thrive here as businesses invest in growth and efficiency.
• Late Cycle (Peak): Defensive sectors like Energy and Materials gain strength as inflation rises and demand for basic commodities increases.
• Recession: Capital rotates into "Safe Haven" defensive sectors like Utilities, Healthcare, and Consumer Staples to preserve wealth.

You don't need to be an economist to use this. Monitor sector-specific ETFs (e.g., XLK for Tech, XLE for Energy). When a sector consistently outperforms the broader market index over a period of weeks or months, it is often signaling institutional capital inflow—follow that flow, don't fight it.
